Tooth Decay In Kids: Causes And Prevention

Dental decay, also known as dental caries, is an infection that damages the structures of teeth. It occurs when bacteria in the mouth form plaque, a sticky substance that adheres to teeth and causes tooth decay. Tooth decay in children is common, and there are several factors that can contribute to its development.

One of the best things you can do as a parent is to make sure that you take your child to the dentist in Dallas. While your child's primary teeth will eventually fall out, it is important to keep these teeth healthy so that they will still be there when your child is old enough for a full set of adult teeth.

Causes of Tooth Decay

Bottle feeding

Bottle feeding is correlated with an increased risk of tooth decay in babies. That's because parents are often unaware that babies aren't supposed to nurse on a bottle of milk or juice the entire time they're awake.

That's because when bottles aren't cleaned properly, bacteria can grow and lead to tooth decay. Kids who drink juice from bottles or sippy cups all day are at a higher risk for cavities.

Poor oral hygiene

The plaque that accumulates on the teeth each day can harden and turn into calculus or tartar. Plaque that is not removed from the teeth turns into acid, which can erode the tooth enamel. If plaque remains on the teeth, it can turn into cavities. Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to cavities and tooth decay.

Poor diet

Diet is one of the primary causes of tooth decay in kids. A diet that is high in sugar and carbohydrates increases plaque production, causes cavities and leads to gum disease. Eating too many sweets can also affect a child's dental health.

Genetic predisposition

Children who have a family history of dental caries may be predisposed to developing this condition. Some medications, such as antibiotics, may also cause decay.

Injury

Injuries are a common cause of tooth decay in kids. When a child's tooth is broken, it exposes the delicate inner layers of the tooth to bacteria, plaque, and acids. This can lead to painful infection and tooth decay.

Prevent Cavities in Kids

There are a variety of ways to help your child prevent tooth decay. While brushing and routine dental visits to our dentist in Dallas, TX, are effective, you can also do more at home, such as:

  1. Eat tooth-healthy foods
  2. Reduce snacking
  3. Limit fruit juice
  4. Avoid sticky foods
  5. Avoid hard candies
  6. Use fluoride toothpaste
  7. Avoid brushing too hard
